Prez Sez - August 2023

Well, another month is in the books. I hope that everyone is taking advantage of this dry weather to get out and put some mileage on the odometer.

I will let everyone know that we have not escaped without incident this riding season. I know of two members that have had incidents this season. Thankfully both are on the road to recovery. That brings me to my first thing to mention, which is a huge thank you to Eve and Adam Benedix who have been our sunshine committee for the past decade. If you have received a card or flowers etc.… from the club, it was courtesy of Eve and Adam. So, if you see them give them a well-deserved thank you. Eve and Adam are stepping down from this role, and I would like to ask the membership if they would consider picking up the baton and help the club continue this invaluable program. Personally, I would like to thank the two of them, as someone who has received a card recently it was greatly appreciated knowing that I had my riding “family” thinking of me during this difficult time.

I have been trying to, as Neil Peart once said, “soothe my baby soul” by trying to get out and ride as much as possible. First by attending the Hiawatha rally, then by being allowed to join Curt and Ken Henry as we rode to the national rally. Thankfully they put up with me for the entire trip and didn’t quietly leave me behind in the middle of the night! Even with some of my poor choices for accommodations. But as one club member recently told me it is those little things we remember and that make the trip memorable. Then let’s just say I made lots of memories!

I recently began participating in the Grand Coddiwomple. This year’s challenges have to do with the fiftieth anniversary of BMW MOA which, I must confess, did not excite me. Then I saw another participant post a picture of a distillery as part of the challenge. I don’t know what it says about me but suddenly I found a challenge I could get excited about. So, the last couple of weekends I have been coddiwompiling around Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, taking pictures of road signs and distilleries in the area.

I am looking forward to the Grand Marais Campout in a couple of weeks, I always enjoy the time spent up there. Although in past years this has like the state fair and Labor Day for the non-riding public signaled the coming end of the summer/riding season.  This year I have planned to attend the Fall Color Ride in October. So here is hoping for an extended riding season.

If you are interested in any of these things or need to find something to participate in, I encourage you to check out our club event calendar. We have multiple events listed there. Hopefully you will find something there to get excited by. I will point out that the BMW demo truck is coming to Moon soon so if you’re thinking about that next bike there’s no better opportunity than to go out and take it for a test ride.

Otherwise, I hope you continue to have a safe and enjoyable riding season. Let’s hope it lasts for a while.
